About Tara Marcinkowski
Sault Ste. Marie is my home, and has always been. Even when I lived in Southern Ontario for the past 14 years. Much to the confusion of my Toronto friends and colleagues, over the past decade, I have never stopped calling it home.
Years ago, like many young people, I took my small town ideals and values, packed up for university and ventured down south for education that was only offered there. After getting my undergraduate degree at Western, I moved to Toronto, studied naturopathic medicine for 4 years, wrote my board exams and became licensed as a naturopathic doctor.
Toronto afforded me unique and diverse opportunities to gain valuable practice experience. Among my favourite was working at a downtown Aboriginal health facility. With smudging sage filling the building and having the honour to work among many healthcare providers, including traditional healers, elders and medicine people, it inspired the re-connection to my Métis heritage.
When my grandmother passed away in 2013, I missed home even more. It motivated me to put my priorities in perspective and consider what mattered most to me. Growing up, she always told me to listen to my heart, and thats exactly what I did. I took a leap of faith, relocated to my cherished hometown in 2015. I am truly beyond thrilled to be back.
Since I have moved back to Sault Ste. Marie, people regularly ask, Do you miss Toronto?. Although I enjoyed my time in Toronto, met so many amazing friends and had such incredible patients there, I longed to come home. I am so happy I had my time in the big city and wouldnt change anything. Now Im grateful to be immersed in beautiful landscapes, to be with my family and life-long friends, and to be back in the place where my heart never left.
