About Jim Farquharson
After a lengthy and successful career as an insurance underwriter (Fellow of Insurance Institute of Canada – FIIC) and a general insurance broker (Chartered Insurance Broker – CIBOnt.) Jim attended Wilfred Laurier University, graduating in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Biological Sciences (with distinction), and then attended the Ontario College of Naturopathic Medicine (now the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine) graduating in 1990 as co-valedictorian. He set up a family practice in Ayr, Ontario, where he practices.
Jim Is a third-generation Naturopathic Doctor. He is the proud grandson of Dr. James Farquharson (Dec. 1944) who was instrumental in the development of the first regulation for ND’s in Ontario in 1925 and the proud son of Dr. Robert B. Farquharson (Dec. 1991) who practiced in Orillia for 45 years and co-founded the Ontario College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1978. Jim is the father of five children, the eldest of whom is a Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. Rebecca Cannon.
Jim has served as an OAND board member (1990 – 1996), as vice-chair in 1993, and as chair in 1994 and 1995. In 1998, he served as a board member and chair of the Insurance Committee of the professional association, and in 1999, he served as a board member of the financial committee of the association. He served as a board member of the Canadian Assoc. of Naturopathic doctors during 1994 – 1996 and as a committee member of several committees of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine during the years 1993 – 1996. He served as a member of the palliative care committee (Waterloo Region) during 1998 – 1999. Jim returned to serve on the Ontario Association of Naturopathic Dr’s in April 2007 and continues to serve to this date.
Jim’s passions include his faith (serving on the leadership board of forwarding Baptist Church in Cambridge as an elder), his family Five Children and their spouses and seven grandchildren, his Naturopathic Healthcare clinics both in Ayr, and Nairobi Kenya, playing golf and ice hockey, reading and travel.
In 2005, Jim started developing naturopathic humanitarian medical work in Nairobi, Kenya. To date, he and his staff operate eight part-time clinics in the townships surrounding Nairobi, where they provide free health care to thousands of patients monthly, including those suffering from AIDS/HIV. These patients are treated with homeopathic medicines, botanical medicines, nutritional supplements, and Bowen technique (as trained by Dr. Don Warren, N.D), Jim anticipates opening many more clinics in Kenya as resources and staff become available.
