About

Eggleston, Heather

Heather20Eggleston.jpgI was born and raised in the greater Birmingham area in Alabama. I attended Auburn University, located in Auburn, Alabama, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry in May of 2013. During my time at Auburn University, I volunteered with several organizations, including Tau Beta Sigma, a National Honorary Service Sorority, and Medical D; these volunteer organizations introduced me to the diverse field of service in medicine. I was introduced to biomedical research during SUCCESS, a summer program at The Ohio State University, in the summer of 2012. Inspired by my research under Dr. Daniel Wozniak in the Center for Microbial Infection and Immunity identifying pathoadaptive variants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, I continued my pursuit of research with Dr. Peter Panizzi in the Department of Drug Discovery and Development at Auburn University. My project focuses on the pathobiology of the pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes in a murine model of subcutaneous infection with a particular focus on the virulence factor streptokinase. This work will be useful in identifying novel molecular targets for the attenuation of S. pyogenes infection, in addition to molecular markers for rapid diagnostic testing. I continued this project throughout my senior year, as well in my current role as a research assistant. My research experience and my time as a medical volunteer have motivated me to pursue a career in medical research in order to make an impact on human health. I have a particular interest in microbial pathogenesis and immunology, and Read More
